Posttraumatic growth describes the positive psychological changes that can arise after confronting a major life crisis. It goes beyond simply getting back to where you were; it involves enduring shifts in how a person thinks about life, themselves, and their relationships. People may report greater appreciation for life, closer and more meaningful connections with others, a sense of personal strength, the discovery of new possibilities or goals, and changes in spirituality or worldview. This distinguishes it from resilience, which is about bouncing back to prior functioning without necessarily experiencing these deeper transformations; recovery, which focuses on returning to pre-crisis levels of functioning; and adaptation, which is adjusting to a new reality but not necessarily accompanied by the qualitative growth described in posttraumatic growth.
